Plunderland for iPhone- app review

Plunderland is Apple’s App of the Week this week. Does it deserve it? Yes and no. Developer JohnnyTwoShoes has made a solid effort to bring pillaging across the sea in the hands of eager gamers.

The premise of Plunderland is you are a ghost with pirates that sail across the sea to attack and sink enemy ships, pillage tribes people and take money from their monuments then make it to the next port. Sounds fun? Well, get used to it because that is what you do over, and over, and over again with little variety. Call me a stinker, but I don’t see the allure with this game.

Sure, the water physics are nice. You tilt the iPhone left or right to make your boat move in that direction. When there is a storm, etc, the water behaves in a more erratic manor, making maneuvering more difficult. Once you are on the high seas, you come across your enemy; the British warships. You have a couple ways to take them out. First is to use your ships cannon. You have a nifty way of angling the cannon to shoot your targets, just move your finger along the bottom and you will get a reticule via a line that helps your aiming. Release your finger and you fire your cannonballs. Second, you can use the enemies cannonballs against themselves. Before the enemy launches an attack, the cannon will puff smoke, that is your cue to ready your finger and deflect the cannonball back upon the enemy ship and with luck, split it in two!

I know, I make it sound exhilarating, and it is the first two or three times you do it. Sadly, Plunderland does little to keep your attention. Future attacks add blimps and more, but the fun is gone by that point. The attacking villagers is a simple “tap, tap. tap” on the totems to get money and fling some villagers around in an effort to extract some more dough. Again… zzzz…

There is nice upgrade system though, you can upgrade your ship, cannons and bowsprits by earning said money above. The game has excellent promise. The controls, physics and graphical style all lend them selves to a success. However, the bland  I really, really wanted to like this game, being highlighted on Apple’s App Store, but alas, mateys, I just can’t bring myself to recommend this lack-luster treasure.

[$2.99- iTunes Link]

UPDATE: I had a delightful Twitter chat with the developers. I explained that I had played 50% thorough the game and became unchallenged with the levels and objectives. They understood and are looking at a way to unlock the more exciting and complex levels earlier for more “hardcore” gamers. I also said that when I find the time to complete the game 100%, I would update this review to include my findings. I am hopeful that by the time I do this, they will have some new content available. You can follow the developer on Twitter here.

Android Captivate and Vibrant get reviewed — the competition

AT&T and T-Mobile bring the Android competition with the Samsung Galaxy S-class Captivate and Vibrant

Phil Nickinson, my counterpart over at sibling site Android Central has just posted his AT&T Android Captivate review and T-Mobile Android Vibrant review, the latest, greatest US GSM competition to our own iPhone 4. They’re both Galaxy S-class devices, but one of the strengths of Android is the ability for manufacturers like Samsung and carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile (and Verizon and Sprint when their versions launch) to modify and customize the hardware and software to make their devices distinct.

Ally already posted her thoughts on the AT&T Captivate vs. iPhone 4, so if you’re trying to decide between the two, or between them and the T-Mobile Vibrant, give Phil’s a read to and then come back here and let us know what you think.

Scoble death-grips Android Captivate before Apple

AT&T Captivate vs iPhone 4 death grip

We’re guessing Apple will get an AT&T Captivate (or similar Samsung Galaxy S-class device) death-grip video up sooner or later, but in the meantime… Scoble to the rescue!

He shows both devices in the same area on the same network dropping bars and, he says, calls. We get it. Manufacturers aren’t perfect. Phones aren’t perfect. How many more videos will we get before this meme dies like bars beneath watery flesh?

And no, it’s not an outsource, just yet another video making its hits off the antennagate saga where no phone, on no carrier is safe. Now before anyone cries “yeah, but iPhone 4 only needs a death-touch, not a death-grip!“, we’ve already seen other videos showing the Galaxy getting killed by a single finger as well.

Of course, iPhone 4 is iPhone 4 in every market and on every carrier, so if anyone has a problem it’s very easy to find out about everyone else who has that problem. With other devices, if someone has a problem with a Captivate will that get tracked to someone else with a problem on a Vibrant on T-Mobile, or a Galaxy in Europe?

No doubt Consumer Reports is on top of that.

Belkin Max Sleeve for iPad – accessory review

YouTube Link

The Belkin Max Sleeve for iPad not only does a great job of protecting your iPad, but it gives you a little extra room to stick some of your accessories in as well. The case is made of a fabric material that is pleated on the front. This is what allows you to have a zipper compartment in the front to stick your other gadgets in.

The inside of the case is a foamy white mesh material. It’s extremely soft so you don’t have to worry about it scratching your iPad. It’s also a loose fit, which means you won’t damage your iPad while taking it out and putting it back in the case. There’s always a down side to a case not fitting snugly though, and that’s if you forget to zip it and pick up the case by the wrong end, it’s very likely your iPad could go crashing to the floor. We didn’t have this happen with this case, but I could see that being a problem as the material on the inside doesn’t offer any grip.

The way we cast that fear aside was to put a silicon case on the iPad and then put it in the Belkin Max Sleeve. The silicon provides the grip and solves the issue. I know a lot of people wouldn’t want to buy 2 cases so it isn’t an ideal situation. My advice? It’s a great case worth the money, just be careful how you pick it up, or make sure you always zip it up.

Other than the sliding out of the case issue, this is a great case and well worth the money. It offers superior protection in an unobtrusive form factor. Even though it’s small, it still lets you stow away other objects, which is nice. If there’s any girls out there like me that hate carrying around a laptop/iPad bag and a purse, this is awesome. Simply throw your phone, credit cards, etc in the front pouch and you’re good to go.  You can purchase the Belkin Max Sleeve for iPad from the TiPb Accessory Store.

Pros

Allows for extra storage room in the front pocket

Material on the outside is easy to grip on to

Material on inside won’t scratch your iPad

Cons

Inside material is a little slick so forgetting to zip up could cause an iPad to fall out

Zipper on front pocket is sometimes a bit hard to pull

Xilisoft iPhone Ringtone Maker —this changs everything———iphone4

Thanks to the Retina display, everything you see and do on iPhone 4 looks amazing. Text in books, web pages, and email is crisp at any size. Images in movies and photos are stunning at almost any angle. That’s because the Retina display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.

In a word, resolutionary.

By developing pixels a mere 78 micrometers wide, Apple engineers were able to pack four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5-inch (diagonal) screen found on earlier iPhone models. The resulting pixel density of iPhone 4 — 326 pixels per inch — makes text and graphics look smooth and continuous at any size.

Brilliant, no matter how you look at it.—-

The iPhone 4 Retina display uses technology called IPS (in-plane switching) — the same technology used in the Apple LED Cinema Display and iPad — to achieve a wider viewing angle than on typical LCDs. Which means you can hold iPhone 4 almost any way you want and still get a brilliant picture. That’s perfect when you’re sharing photos with a friend or moving your iPhone around while playing a driving or flying game. In addition, the Retina display offers four times the contrast ratio of previous models, so whites are brighter, blacks are darker, and everything is more beautiful.

Advancements in the glass. And under it.

Made from the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed trains, the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.

The Retina display includes LED backlighting and an ambient light sensor that intelligently adjusts the brightness of the screen for optimal viewing and battery life. When you lift iPhone to your ear for a phone call, a proximity sensor immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent accidental dialing.

However, in the process of application, you have again what difficulties? This software can help you.

iPhone 4 features: Using LED flash in low light video

The new iPhone 4 is equipped with a much improved 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities. In addition, there is a built-in LED flash to help in low light situations. We have put the camera and the flash to the test in almost every way except when using the flash to illuminate a poorly lit room while recording HD video. That is, until now!

I have recorded a quick video to see just how well LED flash works in combination with the video camera. As expected, the light does not make much of a difference on items more than a few feet away; but for objects that are close, the little light does an excellent job.

Have you tried your iPhone 4 LED flash out yet? How’s it working for you?

Pandora Internet Radio Station is a free Internet music station that individualizes your music playlist based on what you tell it you like and don't like. Pandora has grown to over 12 million registered users since it began using the Music Genome Project in 2000. Now, your individualized Pandora music stations can be streamed free to the new Apple iPhone 3G using the Pandora App Store Download. You do not need Internet access to stream the Pandora personalized music stations to the Apple iPhone 3G like you do on your laptop or desktop version of Pandora Internet Radio.

Check out the demonstration of Pandora Internet Radio Station on the new Apple iPhone 3:

Pandora Demonstration on the Apple iPhone

DOWNLOAD PANDORA NOW TO APPLE iPHONE 3G

You can also use Pandora Personalized Internet Radio services on as many as 50 other types of cell phones. Some cell phone companies charge a fee for streaming your individualized Pandora Music Stations to your cell phone. You can learn more about using the mobile services from Pandora Internet Radio Station by visiting the Pandora Demonstration link above.

In case you have never heard of Pandora Personalized Internet Radio Station, you should check it out. Using the Music Genome Project, Pandora can individualize your music stations based on the first song or artist you enter into your station. You can help Pandora customize your music playlist by giving their next song choice a Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down. You can also build multiple stations based on different music genres. One cool service by Pandora is that you can view music videos from popular music festivals like Austin, Texas' South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW).

You can build different individualized music stations on Pandora Internet Radio Station. For example, because Mamma Mia! – The Movie is opening in theaters on July 18, I entered the artist ABBA into Pandora. Using the Music Genome Project technology, Pandora was able to build my personalized music playlist for other songs and artists based on harmonizing, genre, date of artist popularity, and my age. The songs that were automatically added to my ABBA music station included selections from Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benatar, The Eagles, Grease, Belinda Carlisle, The Bangles, Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, Journey, Roxette, and more.
I then selected Create A New Station and entered The Who as my first artist. Well, you can imagine the cool classic rock n' roll songs I got next in my Pandora rock channel.

Once Pandora starts building your personalized playlist station, you can tell Pandora to add a song or artist to the station, or tell Pandora you like or don't like a particular song that it selected. You can also download songs from iTunes into your station and you can download your personalized station to your iPod, MP3 player or CD. For a great article on how to download your Pandora Personalized Music Station, visit this Associated Content article:

How to Record a Pandora Radio Station for Offline Listening

Your Pandora Music Station will play on your desktop computer while you are working on articles for Associated Content, blogging on your favorite blog, or surfing the Internet. Some employers will allow employees to stream music from Pandora Internet Radio Station while working because it does not require a third party player to stream. This prevents Pandora music streaming from taking up storage space or bandwidth on the employers server.

Check it out – you will think this is the best Internet radio station on the web!

Guitar Hero for iPhone – app review

During the WWDC 2010 keynote, Activision announced and released Guitar Hero on the iPhone. This game is well made and provides a lot of enjoyment for players as they strum, tap, slide and whammy to the beat of popular rock songs.

The gameplay of Guitar Hero is fun, unique and includes much more than tapping notes. An arrow pointing left or right indicates that you need to tap the note where the arrow begins and slide your finger to where the arrow ends. This action needs to happen fairly quickly. If two or more notes are connected by lines, then you must tap the first note and slide your finger to the next notes. Your finger needs to reach each note connected in the line at the appropriate time that corresponds to the beat of the song. A vertical line means that you must hold down the note until the line ends. Sometimes these appear at the end of an arrow which mean you must slide and hold. The last thing that comes up is an orange bar that is the length of all four notes. This bar simply needs to be tapped at any location.

Some notes have stars on them. Successfully hitting all these notes in a sequence adds to your star power. There is blue bar on the right of the screen which indicates how much star power you have. Once it reaches half-way, a blue bar will appear above the note catchers. Tapping this activates your star power and doubles your score multiplier. The more star power you have, the longer it lasts.

Guitar Hero also offers character customization, leaderboards, Faecbook sharing, and in-app purchases. If you want more than the 6 songs included with Guitar Hero, then you must purchase songs in bundles of three. Each song pack costs $1.99. There are no free songs available for download.

Guitar Hero includes the following 6 tracks:

Queen – “We Are The Champions”
Rise Against – “Savior”
The Rolling Stones – “Paint It Black”
Vampire Weekend – “Cousins”
Weezer – “Say It Ain’t So”
The White Stripes – “Seven Nation Army”

The downloadable song packs via in-app purchase are grouped by the following artists:

The Faint, Minus the Bear and Silversun Pickups
Band of Skulls, Obits and The White Stripes
Darkest Hour, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Protest the Hero
A Day to Remember, AFI and Breaking Benjamin
Vampire Weekend
Queen

I have thoroughly enjoyed the short time I’ve spent playing Guitar Hero and don’t plan to stop playing anytime soon. The game runs great, looks great, and is very well designed. It’s only a matter of time before I become a famous rock star!

Videos and screenshots after the break!

Pros

More than just tapping and holding involved in game play
Character customization
Leaderboards and Facebook sharing
In-app song pack purchases
Looks and runs great

Cons

Cannot purchase individual songs
Photo Booth photos are poor quality
